Entering Hypnosis

In the Ithaca Journal, Anne Marie Cummings describes entering hypnosis at http://www.theithacajournal.com/article/20110719/NEWS01/107190338/Alternative-Tompkins-Entering-relaxed-state-hypnosis. While it is an interesting read, I do take issue with the assumption that hypnosis requires relaxation. This is a common misperception. Actually, hypnosis can take place in a completely alert and even agitated state. What is required is focused attention and the bypass of that part of the conscious mind known as the critical factor which in turn heightens suggestibility. The route to this is typically to intensify the involvement of the imagination. Relaxation certainly can be a context for hypnosis, but it is not a requirement.

All the best,
