eDonkey farewell . . .

Big news in peer-to-peer file sharing . . . eDonkey settles music industry war . . . what they mean by settles music industry war here is capitualate to the megapowers and pay millions of dollars in “damages” and then go bellyup and never darken the file-sharing business again. Kazaa died in similar fashion. Grokster was the key decision and the others didn’t even make it to court it seems as the pressure and pockets of the music companies made it clear they were out for blood. The baby has now been thrown out with the bathwater as far as peer-to-peer goes. Limewire is still up but not for long. For now, folks will be using bitTorrent, I suppose, or some such thing. Eventually, as warned by the eDonkey founder last year, “U.S. P-to-P companies would all cease to exist because they would lack the resources to defend themselves against the record companies” . . . we’re not even talking about mom and pop operations, this is hundreds of millions of dollars in and out of play. Anyone know of a reliable p2p client that allows multiple downloads in the background that is still around? Not for anything illegal, but for legitimate file sharing, of course.
