Playing with the Stereo Window

I once made a small little demonstration thingie for the 3D Stereoview Exchange that showed a bit on how mounting images in a stereo pair can affect the placement of the stereo window. The stereo window, is the viewing plane.

The following demonstration images are from an old Realist shot of my daugther Kaye from way back when I was still the sun and moon and I was shooting hundreds of photos of her in film and hand cutting and mounting them (now I take thousands of photos in digital with digital processing and all that).

These images are anaglyphs so you need your red-blue glasses to see them correctly. You can also see the larger images in an album here (personally, I think the stereopairs are more descriptive of the effect but I went with anaglyph here for ease of presentation).

The original shot was taken on Fuji 100 ASA print film, prints were then chopped up and mounted to individual views. These were scanned into Photoshop for fun and games.

Playing with the Stereo Window One:
Fingers on the Glass

Kaye is smudging her hands on the glass of the stereo window. I hope she doesn’t leave any fingerprints. This is the first of a trio of versions of the same image, mounted in different relationships to the stereo window.

Playing with the Stereo Window Two:
Waving from Behind the Glass

Kaye is waving at us from well behind the glass of the stereo window. She looks so far away.

Playing with the Stereo Window Three:
Breaking the Glass

Uh oh! Kaye’s gone and broken the glass of the stereo window. Oh, wait, it’s okay, she just opened it and has placed her hand through the window. It’s a good thing, it’s just her hand that’s coming through the window or she might fall. Note that her trunk, shirt, and the rest of her is still safely behind the window so the frame isn’t cutting anything important off – I love my daughter and would hate to see her accidentally cut by a sharp window edge.

All the best,
Brian
