Journey to the Center of the Earth . . .
. . . coming in 3D!

Cinematical has a bit on reports that Walden Media, one of the production companies involved with The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe will next be producing 3D Version of Journey to the Center of the Earth . . .

Empire is reporting that Walden Media, one of the production companies currently working on The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, is planning an update to the class story Journey to the Center of the Earth. The new movie will feature a modern day father/son team who discovers that Jules Verne’s novel was not fiction. I hear you mocking this news. I know your eyes are rolling at the thought of yet another Hollywood return to a tired old story- but wait! This one has a twist. The new film will reportedly be shot only in 3D, and is aiming for a wide release, hoping to pull in 3000 “normal” theatres, not just IMAX. Am I a geek for being really excited about this news? Yeah, you’re right, I am. I am, in fact, a perfect representative of precisely the base of people Walden Media hopes to appeal to with this new film. I know I’m walking right into their marketing ploy, but holy crap, 3D! If this movie is successful, could it trigger a new trend? Would that new trend be even a remotely good thing, or is such a movie only fun because of its novelty gimmick? I mean, overall, a movie in 3D is going to need all the things that any movie needs to succeed, but holy crap, 3D!

Koolness.

For the original Empire post, go here . . . the big news is that this will be the first big budget film releast shot only in 3D:

The modern day set movie will see a father and son discover that Jules Verne’s 1864 novel was not merely science fiction. The most exciting thing about the film, however, is that it will be the first wide-release, live-action movie shot only in 3D. Where Imax cinemas have screened 3D movies for years, Journey will play in ‘normal’ cinemas, showing on around 3000 prints in the US (the same amount as most big budget movies). Olly Richards: Well whatever the quality of the movie – and it sounds promising – this has to be one to see. 3D is becoming a much bigger deal in movies now (Chicken Little will be released in a 3D format that apparently looks stunning) but a full-length live action 3D feature is truly something we’ve never seen before. And it’s going to have dinosaurs in it!

Big news. Good stuff. Just hope we can jump on the ol’ 3D Bandwagon or 3D Cinema Wave over here.
