A bit of a discussion on hypnotic seals . . . hypnotic seals, where a hypnotist gives a suggestion that then seals the client from ever being hypnotized again either by anyone other than the original hypnotist or by persons who don’t fit the hypnotist’s criteria, are unethical . . . well, in my very strong opinion, they are extremely unethical . . . but they used to be common practice among doctors or psychologists who do hypnosis to "protect" their clients from being hypnotized by "improperly trained" or "unqualified" lay hypnotists. A few professional hypnotists have been known to use them as well as a means of ensuring the client won’t "accidentally" be hypnotized by someone else . . . read that as an attempt at monopolizing the local market. A lot of folks in the recreational D/s Hypno-fetish community seem to be using them as well.
There are a number of seals and approaches to seals . . . it is helpful to know how to "break" seals when one is confronted with them. It isn’t really that you "break" the seal but that you use one of a number of particular techniques to "lockpick" and then remove the seal so that the client can then be helped and go on with full consensual use of the ability to enter state as the client chooses.
The practice of sealing used to be much more common in the 1950s but fell into disrepute as even the professional organizations began to see it as a violation of a person’s rights of consensual choice . . . however, in recent years, as noted in the first post in this thread, a number of psychologists – yes, even highly respected practitioners – have begun reccommending the voluntary consent set for the seal by asking a client – while in hypnosis and already having established rapport and a habit of compliance (which I would strongly suggest is NOT the same as informed consent) – "Would you like me to give you the suggestion now that you will only be able to enter this state and be hypnotized by a qualified hypnotist to protect you and ensure that your work here will not be undone by others?" or, other ways of gaining consent that are even more powerful which gain automatic compliance and put the seal in place . . . I won’t describe them here as there’s bound to be some dumbass who takes the description less as a warning than as an invitation to behave in an unscrupulous way. In any case, the sealmakers get their automatic yes. Therefore they have consent by nature of a very loaded frame. The D/s people who do this sort of thing are just plain buying into their D/s fantasy of ownership but it is still unethical as even those relationships should be based upon informed consent rather than reframed manipulation.
Anyone who sets hypnotic seals is violating a client’s right of choice for the future . . . even if that seal is placed consensually. Folks don’t need hypnotic seals to choose what hypnotist to work with in the future and by placing the things there you are limiting opportunities and possibilities for the future . . . unless you remove it later (but why would you, if you’re going to behave unethically today there’s not reason for you to remove that power you have manipulated from another tomorrow).
If you are unfamiliar with ways of breaking them, and there are some straightforward techniques, the seals can be bugbears but once you know how to bypass them the become mere puzzles instead of brick walls. Even then, you may need to try a few different lockpicks to get at it.
If you are a hypnotist, please do NOT use a seal. They are unethical. You can ensure your good work with a client is not undone by doing it well in the first place and you can ensure that a client comes to you rather than competitors in the future by knowing what you’re doing and doing good work in the first place. Seals are unethical, unethical, unethical. Hmmm. I wonder if that was clear.
