HYPNOSIS and MAGICK
An Ultimate Guide to
Hypnotic Induction Techniques
for Occult Practitioners

As many of our regular readers and community members here know, we are currently celebrating International Wytchery Week! The “week” lasts from Feb. 14 to Feb. 28 (yes, it’s an unusually long week but this is based upon a tradition from the 1600s when Goody Mary Brialston was hanged as a witch for making time flow slowly – hint, there’s very good evidence that she did no such thing and yet we honor her and other women with a week that takes two weeks). International Wytchery Week (IWW) is specifically celebrated by the International Association of Wytches, Wyzards, and Wize Old Fools (and others with an interest) and has been since 1963. The long week typically begins on Valentine’s Day and runs through the end of February (on Leap Years, there is usually a rather large special celebration event).

Since it is IWW, I thought it would be fun to take a look at how we can combine Hypnosis with Magick or Esoteric or Occult practices. Most regular readers know the combination of hypnosis and things esoteric and metaphysical happens to be one of my specialties and I have been teaching courses on the subject for decades. Since some of our core hypnosos training video packages relate to using hypnosis and magick, we have extended our Holiday Special at https://briandavidphillips.net/holiday
to last through to the end of IWW as well . . . so YOU still have (limited) time to take advantage of the savings (of course, if you miss the holiday sale, the training packages are still awesome value).

Magick and Hypnosis have very different communities and most folks would believe they do not have much in common . . . except when they are combined. When that happens, things can get very interesting indeed.

So . . . we are going to do a bit of an extended deep dive into that combination . . . here we go!

Introduction

Hypnosis Magick
From the get-go, I want to stress this essay is an introductory look at Hypnosis and Magical Practice and as such some principles are simplified . . . if you want a true in depth and comprehensive exploration of the topic, do your own deep dive into the very many blog posts, videos, courses, and more I have previously provided on the topic. Seriously, there is a digital ton of my material on the subject available here.

Hypnosis is a powerful tool that has been used for centuries to explore the depths of the human mind. Its potential for inducing altered states of consciousness has made it a popular technique in many fields, including medicine, psychology, and even entertainment. However, what is less commonly known is the role of hypnotic induction in occult practices.

In the context of the occult, hypnotic induction can be used to help practitioners achieve a state of heightened awareness that can facilitate deeper exploration of the self and the universe. By inducing a hypnotic state, practitioners can tap into the power of the subconscious mind and unlock new realms of knowledge and understanding. This can be particularly helpful in rituals, divination, and other forms of occult exploration, as it can enhance intuition, psychic abilities, and communication with spirits and other entity constructs.

In this blog post, we will explore the importance of hypnotic induction in occult practices and examine some techniques that can be used to induce a hypnotic state. Whether you’re a seasoned practitioner or just starting out, understanding the principles of hypnotic induction can help you deepen your experience of the occult and enhance your connection to the unseen world. We will cover various techniques such as breathing exercises, progressive relaxation, and rapid induction, and discuss their benefits and potential risks. Additionally, we will offer tips for overcoming common challenges and seeking professional guidance if necessary.

Please do understand that it does not matter if you believe occult or magickal phenomena are real or imagined, the techniques work just the same.

So, if you’re ready to take your occult practice to the next level, let’s dive in and discover the power of hypnotic induction for occult exploration.

What is Hypnotic Induction?

Hypnosis Magick
Hypnotic induction refers to the process of guiding a person into a state of hypnosis. This is typically done by a hypnotist or practitioner, who uses a series of verbal suggestions and techniques to help the subject enter a state of deep relaxation and heightened awareness. Hypnotic induction can be thought of as a kind of trance state, in which the subject is more open to suggestion and less aware of their surroundings.

There are many different types of hypnotic induction, each with their own unique characteristics and methods. Some of the most common techniques include progressive relaxation, rapid induction, and self-hypnosis. Progressive relaxation involves guiding the subject through a series of relaxation exercises that help them to release tension and enter a state of deep relaxation. Rapid induction, on the other hand, can involve using intense stimuli such as a loud noise or a sudden movement to quickly induce a state of hypnosis. Self-hypnosis is a technique that allows individuals to induce a hypnotic state on their own, typically through the use of audio recordings or other forms of guided meditation.

During hypnotic induction, the subject may experience a range of physical and mental sensations. They may feel a sense of heaviness or lightness in their body, or a tingling sensation in their limbs. They may also experience visual or auditory hallucinations, or feel as though they are floating or moving through space. While these experiences can be intense, they are typically not harmful and are a natural part of the hypnotic process.

Overall, hypnotic induction is a powerful technique that can help practitioners of the occult to achieve a state of heightened awareness and unlock new realms of consciousness. By understanding the principles of hypnotic induction, practitioners can better harness its power to facilitate their exploration of the self and the universe.

The Importance of Hypnotic Induction in Occult Practices

Hypnosis Magick
In the context of the occult, hypnotic induction is a powerful tool that can be used to facilitate a deep exploration of the self and the universe. By inducing a state of hypnosis, practitioners can bypass the limitations of the conscious mind and tap into the power of the subconscious. This can lead to a heightened awareness of one’s own thoughts and emotions, as well as a deeper connection to the unseen world.

One of the key benefits of hypnotic induction in occult practice is that it can enhance intuition and psychic abilities. By accessing the subconscious mind, practitioners may be able to receive information or insights that they would not have been able to access through conscious thought alone. This can be particularly helpful in divination, where practitioners seek to gain insights into the future or the unknown. By entering a hypnotic state, they may be more receptive to messages from spirits or other entities that can help guide their practice.

Additionally, hypnotic induction can be used to facilitate communication with spirits or other entities. In some forms of occult practice, practitioners may seek to establish a relationship with a particular spirit or deity. By entering a hypnotic state, they may be more open to receiving messages or instructions from that entity, or even to experiencing a physical manifestation of its presence. This can be a powerful and transformative experience that can deepen one’s understanding of the spiritual realm.

Of course, it’s important to note that it is a good idea to approach hypnotic inductions with some measure of, particularly for those inexperienced in hypnosis, this is even more-so the case in the context of the occult. Practitioners should take care to ensure that they are in a safe and secure environment, and that they are working with a reputable and experienced practitioner if necessary (see our Society of Experiential Trance for information on appropriate training toward competence). Additionally, it’s important to remember that hypnosis is not a magic bullet, and that it may not work for everyone in every context. However, for those who are able to enter a hypnotic state, the benefits can be profound and transformative, leading to a deeper connection to the self and the universe.

Hypnotic Induction Techniques for Occult Practices

Hypnosis Magick
There are many different hypnotic induction techniques that can be used in occult practice, each with their own unique benefits and drawbacks. Some of the most common techniques include progressive relaxation, guided visualization, and self-hypnosis.

Progressive relaxation is one of the most common approaches and is a technique that involves guiding the subject through a series of relaxation exercises that help them to release tension and enter a state of deep relaxation. This technique can be particularly helpful for practitioners who struggle with anxiety or stress, as it allows them to let go of their worries and focus on the task at hand. Additionally, progressive relaxation can be a useful technique for inducing a hypnotic state in people who may be resistant to other methods.

Guided visualization, also known as “journeying,” involves guiding the subject through a series of visualizations that can help them to access deeper levels of consciousness. This technique is often used in shamanic and other spiritual traditions, and can be particularly helpful for practitioners who are seeking to connect with specific spirits or entities. By entering a hypnotic state and visualizing a specific scene or entity, practitioners may be able to establish a deeper connection and receive messages or insights from the spiritual realm.

Self-hypnosis is a technique that allows individuals to induce a hypnotic state on their own, typically through the use of audio recordings or other forms of guided meditation. This technique can be particularly useful for practitioners who are unable to work with a hypnotist or practitioner directly, or who prefer to work independently. By practicing self-hypnosis regularly, individuals can develop a deeper understanding of their own minds and bodies, and may be able to access heightened states of awareness more easily.

Of course, there are many other hypnotic induction techniques that can be used in occult practice, and the best technique will vary depending on the individual practitioner and their goals. However, by understanding the principles of hypnotic induction and experimenting with different techniques, practitioners can unlock new realms of consciousness and gain a deeper understanding of themselves and the universe.

Common Challenges with Hypnotic Induction in Occult Practices

Hypnosis Magick
While hypnotic induction can be a powerful tool for exploring the occult, there are also a number of challenges that practitioners may encounter. Some of the most common challenges include difficulty entering a hypnotic state, encountering unexpected or unwanted visions or emotions, and difficulty integrating the experience into one’s daily life.

One of the most common challenges with hypnotic induction is actually entering a hypnotic state. This can be particularly challenging for individuals who are highly analytical or who struggle with relaxation. However, with practice, most individuals can learn to enter a hypnotic state more easily. Practitioners may find it helpful to work with a qualified hypnotist or practitioner who can guide them through the process and provide support and feedback. Much of your progress in this will depend upon aptitude, willingness to let-go, ability to follow instructions exactly, and other factors. However, while some folks may struggle at first, the vast majority of people can indeed manage it.

Another common challenge is encountering unexpected or unwanted visions or emotions during a hypnotic session. While these experiences can be valuable for personal growth and understanding, they can also be unsettling or overwhelming for some individuals. Practitioners may find it helpful to work with a trusted and experienced practitioner who can help them navigate these experiences and provide support as needed. Additionally, it’s important to remember that it’s always okay to pause or end a session if it becomes too overwhelming.

Finally, integrating the experience of hypnotic induction into one’s daily life can also be a challenge. While the experience of entering a hypnotic state can be transformative and enlightening, it can also be difficult to translate these experiences into practical, everyday actions. Practitioners may find it helpful to journal or meditate on their experiences, or to seek support from a trusted community of practitioners who can provide guidance and feedback.

Overall, while there are certainly challenges associated with hypnotic induction in occult practice, these challenges are often outweighed by the profound benefits that practitioners can experience. By working with experienced practitioners, developing a regular practice, and being open to the unexpected, practitioners can unlock new realms of consciousness and deepen their understanding of themselves and the universe.

My Esoteric Hypnosis Work

Hypnosis Magick
Most readers of this blog know my connection to things tarot and of my previous work as moderator and list owner of Tarot-L which was at that time the most highly regarded discussion forum for academic and formal study of things Tarot. I am no longer there but my time there was very positive.

I’ve been deeply interested in hypnosis and things occult since I was a child (I read my first hypnosis book when I was ten years old and by the age of twelve had read everything available in my hometown library) and my interest in the occult blossomed around the same time. I am particularly interested in taking metaphysical and esoteric techniques and adapting them to hypnotic therapy techniques and have found quite a bit of success in my experiments in that regard.

As far as hypnosis goes, I do quite a bit of work adapting esoteric processes to hypnotic techniques. Here’s a podcast I did some years ago on some of those approaches.
