New age gurus suggest that we can heal ourselves by simply changing our minds, but is this concept grounded in cold, hard science? Lissa Rankin, MD explores the scientific literature, reviewing case studies of spontaneous remission, as well as placebo and nocebo effect data, to prove that our thoughts powerfully affect our physiology when we believe we can get well.
Note that her talk has quite a bit of New Age type speech but she’s still basing her approach on hard science, hard science that has shown time and time again that the placebo effect is very real and that the mind can and does heal the body.
Something really worth remembering . . . there are more deaths related to Karōshi (過労死) in the United States than in Japan – that’s death from overwork – with a major difference being that in Japan surviving family members receive death insurance benefits while in the US there are no such benefits.
Of particular note for hypnotists is that helping folks learn the relaxation response in and of itself helps folks heal. Seriously. That’s a big deal and a very important concept.
