Garbage Can Meditation for Stress Relief and More

Most of us don’t really think of a garbage can as the most relaxing of images for a trance meditation but The Garbage Can process actually works wonderfully for relieving stress and helping folks deal with the problems and issues of life.

Now, some folks do this sort of thing differently, and that’s okay too . . . some folks use a crystal bottle and others use magickal boxes or even worry trees and all those and more are perfectly fine. The garbage can as presented in the videos that follow is based upon a process presented by Maureen Murdock in her collection of guided imagery for young people, Spinning Inward which I absolutely recommend for anyone using guided imagery. The book is intended for teachers working with young people but I’ve found many of the scripts perfectly adaptable to adults for other contexts.

In any case, Murdock’s script was originally written as part of a pilot study on imagery and health and has been used in at least one study of children in hospice which found that the kids who did the imagery practice twice a day experienced less fear, stress, and worry as well as less pain which meant less need for invasive medication. The kids in the experimental study ended up having longer average lifespan and – this is important – a significantly higher remission rate.

Now, as adults, we have a lot of stress in our lives . . . lots of the damned stuff . . . but, no matter how rough your life gets, I can’t imagine it could be any worse than the fear and worry experienced by a child who has been told they’re dying of cancer. If there’s one fundamental truth every child understands it’s “old people die and kids don’t” so even if an adult comes down with a terminal illness at least they have a framework to understand that sometimes life is just inherently fucked up and unfair and sometimes very good people get sick while kids don’t have that framework.

So, if something like this very short process – my downloadable mp3 is only six minutes and the videos here are even shorter for running the process – can help kids dying of cancer it sure as hell can help YOU deal with your stress and worry.

Here are the video examples for you to see how I guide a couple young women through the process. This is the first ever hypnosis session for each of these women and the clip takes place after the initial induction and some deepening and other trancework.

First, here’s the quick example . . . see how it doesn’t have to take much time at all.

EXAMPLE ONE

Notice that it may not look like much on the outside but that internally all sorts of effective release occurs.

Our second example is a bit more detailed in terms of the process explanation which is useful for folks who wish to guide others into this sort of process. You do need to log in to see this clip here – any membership level is fine and Basic membership is free. If you’re not a member, just go to https://briandavidphillips.net/membership/ and sign up. Once you’ve confirmed your membership, log in and you’re good to go for this and a whole lot of other good stuff here.

EXAMPLE TWO

This content is for members only.

There you go. It’s a deceptively simple process . . . but extremely effective.

Actually, when I do a stage hypnosis show or an informative speech on trancework, I will often use this process with my volunteers, teaching them how to do it on their own as my special gift to them for volunteering.

If you like you can even purchase a copy of the mp3 as a downloadable file which you can then practice with (after you’ve run the six minute routine a number of times you will be able to do it on your own in even less time, although I do recommend coming back every once in awhile to reinforce your work). You can even find more downloadable mp3s and more at our online store at https://briandavidphillips.net/store/.

All the best,
Brian
