As regular readers know, one area I teach quite a bit on at the university is communication and social influence.
In this brief video, we see one of the principles of social influence in action, that which is often referred to as the Law of Power which states that people are more likely to obey a person who is perceived to be an authority figure or someone in power than those who are not perceived as having power.
Uniforms go a long way in creating the impression of authority.
Here we see a young person holding a sign for three minutes. The sign simply tells motorists to honk twice before entering. You will note that no one pays any attention (there’s a false positive at one point as one car honks once but there’s no indication it’s in response to the sign or if it’s just an impatient driver honking at the car ahead of him).
For the next three minutes, a person dressed in a security worker’s clothes (at least the uniform of this locale) holds up the sing and motorists almost automatically obey.

Obviously, a little power goes a long way.
In my own classes at the university, I ask students to learn the general principles of psychological and social influence but also to test them as the students who created the video above did.
This material is based upon just one of many forms that social psychology or social influence can take. Once we understand the principles behind influence of this type, we can begin to apply those principles in a variety of contexts. We become more effective at changing behaviors and in creating desirable outcomes . . . socially, in business, and within any other context you can imagine.
