Study shows Orgasms unlock Altered States of Consciousness

Scientists have been studying orgasms for some time, some with sociological questions and discussions and others with doodads and whatnots jabbed into indiscreet places while willing volunteers make the beast with two backs. One recent research program shows some unique promise and connects orgasm with altered states of consciousness.

Of course, there is a need to understand the beastie as . . .

It is estimated that one in four women in the US has had difficulty achieving orgasm in the past year, while between 5 and 10 per cent of women are anorgasmic – unable to achieve orgasm at all. But without precise data to explain what happens during this experience, there are few treatment options available for women who might want help.

I should note that the techniques outlined in my Eroticatrance program can indeed help many women who experience difficulty reaching orgasm. The methods are appropriate for therapeutic contexts as well as appropriate consenting adult relationships. Personally, I have found that there are very few women who remain anorgasmic when one employs these techniques and the ones who are orgasmic at the get-go have even more extremely powerful orgasmic and pleasure experiences. The positive flood state processes alone are extremely powerful.

When Janniko Georgiadis at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, and colleagues, performed experiments they found that the same brain region “switched off” during orgasm. Specifically, they saw significant deactivation in an area of the PFC called the left orbitofrontal cortex (OFC). This is a big deal as this is an area associated with control, it’s almost as if a person switches off or surrenders into a special altered state of consciousness in order to experience orgasm.

Georgiadis argues that the OFC may be the basis of sexual control – and perhaps only by letting go, so to speak, can orgasm be achieved. He suggests this deactivation may be the most telling example of an “altered state of consciousness” and one not seen, as yet, during any other type of activity. “I don’t think orgasm turns off consciousness but it changes it,” he says. “When you ask people how they perceive their orgasm, they describe a feeling of a loss of control.” Georgiadis suggests that perhaps orgasm offsets systems that usually dominate attention and behaviour. “I’m not sure if this altered state is necessary to achieve more pleasure or is just some side effect,” he says. It is possible that the inability to let go and reach this altered state may be what prohibits individuals with anorgasmia from reaching climax.

Of course, regular readers here know that altered states of consciousness are no stranger to hypnotists and when we do eXperiential erotic hypnosis, we take advantage of this propensity in order to create powerful and often meaningful orgasmic experiences.

Perhaps this may be one reason that many find appropriate consenting adult erotic hypnosis to be easier to get a jump start on than some other forms. This may also be related to the ease of things like my drinking finger induction or other approaches to engineering experiential ecstasy.

Those of you interested in distance learning on this and related issues regarding erotic hypnosis can check out our Eroticatrance DVD set at http://www.eroticatrance.com. Or, if you wish to have everything you need to go from basic introductory core hypnosis skills through the eroticatrance and advanced ecstatic engineering, then check out the high value special price for our Ultimate Pleasure Hypnosis DVD course package at http://www.eroticatrance.com/package.html. Seriously, the Ultimate Pleasure Hypnosis package is the highest value you will find for this material.

Those interested in my Engineering eXperiential Ecstasy DVD set should see the store page at http://www.briandavidphillips.com/products/ecstasydvd.html although that complete set is included in the Ultimate Pleasure Hypnosis package above.

Now, I do offer hypnotherapy for individuals or couples who wish to address issues related to sexuality and I’ve taught a number of workshops for couples in Taiwan, Hong Kong, India, the United States, and elsewhere.

We will be in Hong Kong in August if you would like to join a workshop . . . drop us a line. If you’re in Taiwan and would like to experience this sort of thing, drop me a line as well . . . since we live here, we occasionally set up workshops or even comprehensive seminars when enough folks express an interest. Yes, we do private sessions, parties, and shows too.

All the best,
Brian
