Does Erotic Hypnosis need to be consensual?

Recently, on the Hypnosis Technique Exchange (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HypnosisTechniqueExchange), we received a query on the nature of consent and hypnosis and why I often say that it is very important for erotic hypnosis to be built upon a consensual model. The querant has read a number of articles in which I have repeatedly emphasized the importance of consensual approaches to erotic hypnosis and asks for clarification:

“I would like to understand what should be the consequences of the lack of consensus. I’m not speaking between two strangers, but in a couple.”

First off, I seriously encourage you to check out the Eroticatrance materials at http://www.eroticatrance.com for detailed explanation of this issue as well as solid introduction into the hows, whys, and wherefores of erotic hypnosis.

As far as I am concerned, consent and consensual processes and images are very important.

For formal hypnosis, consent is part of the hypnotic contract so a person really needs to want to follow your directions for you to normally have any chance of actually hypnotizing them . . . if they don’t want to do it then they just don’t do it.

As to after the hypnosis is achieved, it’s a very good idea to make certain a trance partner consents to the suggestions you’re giving them. Not having a consensual context will most likely lead to damaging a long term relationship. For instance, if your partner doesn’t like anal sex and you suggest that she is enjoying anal sex without her consent she may lose interest in further play with you and even damage long term trust.

Hypnosis is not typically carte blanche to rewrite a trance partner’s entire personality without their consent and attempting to do so with most folks will have negative ramifications.

Granted, there are personality types for whom consent is not a significant issue as the highly suggestible who also have undifferentiated personalities are extremely easy for skilled practitioners to manipulate but these reflector type personalities are very rare . . . not to mention, it’s a pretty shitty thing to abuse someone else merely because you can.

If you’re in a committed loving relationship . . . or at least in the pretense of one . . . it’s a good idea to act with the best interest and consent of your partner in mind . . . seriously, there are probably plenty of things you both would find enjoyable without needing to venture into the nonconsensual areas. Besides, as you both get used to the form and timbre of erotic hypnosis, your personal barriers may find themselves opening up quite a bit anyway, naturally, on their own, and with full consent.
