Is Michael Bay really clueless on how to shoot good 3D?

According to a whole bunch of sources, Michael Bay has no clue what he is doing while shooting the new Transformers movie in 3D. He’s using the state of the art equipment used for Avatar but evidently his aggressive style has screwed up the footage they are getting to the point that they are going to have most of the footage converted to 3D via the same processes used on Airbender and Clash of the Titans (which resulted in rather poor 3D in many scenes). Bay says that his critics are full of it and that the footage he’s shooting is awesome in 3D. I suspect that since there are so many negative reports – including from the film’s photography folks – that it’s likely there is a lot of messed up footage but not because of Bay’s aggressive style, that could lead to some very awesome indeed footage, but rather because he doesn’t quite get what needs to be done in terms of parallax and lens separation to get the right mix for excellent 3D from a spectator’s perspective . . . eye strain is your enemy here. He’s brought on some top notch folks to assist but if his decisions miss something then the results will not be as pleasing. Of course, we will see in the final product. Honestly, I think letting the franchise die and moving on to another ORIGINAL story concept would be better . . . if I had my druthers . . . but, I’m really interested in seeing how these giant mechanical beasties look in 3D so the Phillips Clan will indeed be in line to see the movie when it does come out.
