Women, Sexuality, and Placebo

A recent study found a significant effect of placebo on women with sexual dysfunction.  This ties in very well with what we know about the benefits of hypnosis and suggestion for helping to resolve sexual issues (let alone creating beneficial sexual responses or just having fun).  The study – Correlates of Placebo Response in the Treatment of Sexual Dysfunction: A Preliminary Report by Bradford and Meston at http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1743-6109.2007.00578.x/abstract – found a significant beneficial placebo effect with women who took part in a placebo study in which they were told that they were receiving a new drug to treat their presenting issues but in fact received an inert placebo.  Researchers found that many of the women reported higher satisfaction with their sexual lives, typically immediately, and that many found their sexual partners to be more attentive and better lovers during the trial as well although no special instructions were given to the partners or the test subjects (hmmm, perhaps when folks begin to feel good about themselves this has a ripple effect on how their partners behave with them . . . or, perhaps they were merely seeing the same behavior in a new more positive light . . . either way, they felt good and their sex lives improved).  Of course, this has implications far beyond drug therapy or placebo but has implications on how hypnosis and even simple suggestion can be used to effectively help folks.
