Sony adds 3D shooting to new Cyber-shot cameras

via www.macworld.com

Wait a minute! The reviewer is saying that the new Sony single-lens 3D system is the first mass produced 3D point and shoot camera . . . uh, not quite. I've had my Fuji W1 Real 3D digital camera for a year.

The innovation with the Sony system is that they are using a single lens . . . but don't get too excited. Their system is actually a pan and shoot system where you fire the shutter once and then pan in panorama mode then the camera does the math to figure out what a two-lens system might see. So, it's a technically sophisticated cha-cha system. Does not sound like a step forward . . . back in 2005 my Pentax Optio had a 3D mode (another "first" mass produced point and shoot 3D digital camera which was released well before the current batch of cameras claiming to be first off the block) that was glorified chacha and we quickly ditched that for a Loreo lens attachment for our Canon that was far superior.

Want to see the images in the new Sony cameras, the review says you need to opt for the expensive shutter glasses systems. I am hoping that the format will be more diversely applied than that but who knows. The Fuji camera came with software that was pure crap but at least Stereo Photo Maker was adapted to allow us to use the mpo files with a LOT more versatility (seriously, if you shoot 3D, get that software).

All the best,
Brian
