Secret Signals Men Give When They Lie

It looks like someone's been reading some old neurolinguistic texts (well, I say old but really I mean out-of-date as a whole bunch of new NLP texts stay the same thing as if it's canon).

In SECRET SIGNALS MEN GIVE WHEN THEY LIE at http://shine.yahoo.com/channel/sex/secret-signals-men-give-when-they-lie-1471947/ the authors tell us that if a man looks up and to the left while he's speaking then he is lying.

Uh, no.

Sure, sombunal (some but not all) men look up and to the left when they lie.  Yes.  However, there are also sombunal men who don't.

The trick isn't to memorize specific eye movement cues as particular types of communication because such rigid memorization will work with some but you're going to find yourself completely wrong with others.

No, the trick is to understand that most (or all, but some are really really really good at masking it) men have leakage when they lie.  In poker they call it a TELL.

If you want to know if someone's lying, then find out what they look like when they're telling the truth and when they are recalling their history or describing a fantasy and lying.

If you note their eye movement and posture and all that other good stuff then you have a much better chance of calibrating truth and fiction and catching the lie.

Coincidentally, I ran a lying exercise with eye movement cues just last Thursday in the oral communication course I teach at the university.  We had seen an episode of "Lie To Me" which mentions eye accessing cues so I performed a demonstration with a young woman who didn't know what I was doing other than having her stand in front of the group while I asked questions and asking her classmates to "watch her eyes" . . . most could tell when she was lying after I did the calibrating with truth and fantasy questions and . . . no, her lies were not up and to the left (they were to the right).

The students are running around campus this week accosting random strangers with a task of asking a series of questions and calibrating truth and fiction eye cues.

All the best,
Brian
