Philip Pullman on Censorship

As his Dark Materials series of novels pretty much offended a whole bunch of conservative stalwarts of the Catholic Church, it's no surprise that Philip Pulluman's newest novel The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ is causing some controversy as well.

The new novel, which explores the scifi dark doppleganger motif by telling a what if sort of tale of Jesus Christ and his Evil Twin.
For some reason, not only are some Christians offended by the very idea, some are saying the book should NOT be allowed to be published at all.

While Pullman is perfectly right in his sentiments (bravo to that), one does have to wonder if perhaps there isn't a marketing agenda behind the publication of a book that seems all but designed to piss off a certain sector of the population – granted, a sector that does indeed deserve a bit of pissing off now and again, but marketing agenda still comes to mind . . . which in and of itself is not a bad thing as I don't believe that's all there is to this work as Pullman does have a fertile imagination and these are issues he wishes to play with and explore.

All the best,
Brian
