Public Speaking about Hypnosis

On the Hypnosis Technique Exchange (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HypnosisTechniqueExchange), a discussion is beginning on how one might proceed when giving a public lecture about hypnosis and a comment began . . .

"This does not compete with anything Brian is selling so far as I know so I assume he will not mind me mentioning it."

While I certainly encourage folks to promote my products as much as they humanly can . . . more-so even . . . other folks' products are fair game for mentions on the exchange in the course of a discussion that has naturally evolved.  Replying to a thread in this way would not be out of bounds.  We do have a no advertising policy on the group with the exception of my products and events or those of comoderators or Society of Experiential Trance (http://www.trancesociety.org) instructors for SET-related events.

However, folks are free to mention products from themselves or others IF they fit a naturally evolving line of discussion.  Certainly, folks are also free to have a link to their webpage in their sig files.  If you participate often with valuable insights then folks are more likely to click your link (the folks who post the inane "reply with a nonsequitor or short 'good post' statement just to get exposure" are fooling themselves, quality of content as well as frequency are both important when it comes to worthwhile exposure).  We do stomp on people who start a thread simply as an excuse to promote it, but this tends not to happen on this group.

Certainly the exchange has far less spam and self-promotion than many other groups.  We try to find a balance, although once in awhile we fail.

"I have not seen it yet and cannot recommend it for that reason, but I ordered a DVD set by Don Mottin on Stage Hypnosis and Lecture Demos, my interest being what he has to say about Lecture Demos."

Jerry Kein at http://www.omnihypnosis.org has a couple products which likewise touch upon the subject, albeit not as directly as Don's set . . . his "Making Money in Your Hypnosis Practice" and "Turn Your Free Lecture/Demo into a Profitable Event" programs have some pointers for those looking to monetize public talks about hypnosis . . . although I strongly disagree with his old strategy on pain relief demonstrations as I am uncomfortable using nongenuine effects and prefer all of my demonstrations to be based upon genuine hypnosis and I believe even simple less dramatic effects are highly powerful in the eyes of the general public.  Sticking someone into odd positions or getting them drunk or causing them to have amnesia is dramatic enough without relying upon the sideshow theatrics of the faux pain control.  Lest folks get the wrong idea, I admire and respect Jerry a great deal and strongly encourage folks to check his stuff out.  Just look through the group's message archives for confirmation on that . . . the pain demo thing is just one of my very specific nits that I pick at.

For those of you who do demonstrations or speeches or motivational seminars with businesses, take a look at the way Anthony Galie – http://www.anthonygalie.com  - uses stage hypnosis type effects to demonstrate business principles in his lectures.  He has some videos on his youtube channel at http://www.youtube.com/user/agalie which will give you an idea of his approach.

It is interesting that the commenter notes that I don't seem to have any products on this subject . . . odd that . . . long ago when dinosaurs walked the earth, I earned my BA and MA in the double specialties of Communication and Theatre and have taught public speaking at university for over twenty-five years (my PhD is in Comparative Literature with a dissertation specialty in Interactive Drama).  I have free MP3s that I created for students to improve their public speaking and to deal with communication apprehension and have published academic papers on the subject of using focused trance and hypnosis to help folks with second language communication apprehension and yet I've not done anything on how to give an effective talk on hypnosis.  Now you got me thinkin'!

Of course, while some folks just talk about hypnosis in public, I believe a solid public presentation on hypnosis does well to include hypnotic effects and demonstrations.  Naturally, this is helped a great deal if one has competence in hypnosis . . . so . . . self-promotion in gear . . . go to http://www.briandavidphillips.com for some solid products in basic and advanced hypnosis techniques and some of those products are on very special holiday deep discount for subscribers of the Experiential Hypnosis Newsletter at http://www.briandavidphillips.com/newsletter (just go to the "specials" page for newsletter subscribers, not to mention all the awesome free goodies folks get just for subscribing including a number of free MP3s and access to a slew of instructional videos) . . . although, folks do need to act quickly as the holiday special expires on Jan. 1.

All the best,
Brian
