We’re Number Thirty-Seven . . . the song by Paul Hipp

Paul Hipp celebrates the USA's exciting position in the World Health Organization's ranking of health care systems in the world (see http://www.photius.com/rankings/healthranks.html for the list) through song.

Seriously, if you're reading this in a stream that doesn't include the embedded video so you can't see the video and hear the song, you need to get on over to the original post at Life of Brian at https://briandavidphillips.net/ and watch it now.

Naturally, there will be folks who are excited by the catchy patriotic tune who miss the subtext but such is indeed the nature of the world.

By the way, before I get any gloating messages from folks who notice that the US scored higher than Taiwan, uh, Taiwan's not on that list . . . I assume it has more to do with the fact that Taiwan is technically not recognized as a sovereign nation by most countries on the planet despite fighting for WHO membership for decades (while Taiwan is not independent de jure, it most definitely behaves that way de facto). We actually have excellent health coverage in Taiwan, in average far better than the average in the US.

Oh . . . caveat, keep in mind that while it's a great song and the US healthcare system really lags behind a lot of countries, the WHO ranking is not new and has been around for a long time so theoretically the US could actually be more highly ranked today – see http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2009/sep/14/paul-hipp/rocker-viral-video-mocks-us-37th-best-health-care-/ - although, I would suspect that given recent problems in the United States regarding treatment and insurance, the number may also very well be lower today than thirty-seven.

All the best,
Brian
