Some people treat all relationships as competitions, either consciously or unconsciously, they want to keep things moving in a way so that they collect their brownie points to win the game.
Way back in university when I was studying theatre (I have undergraduate and graduate degrees in acting and directing), I found Transactional Analysis to be an incredibly useful tool for analyzing character. Sure, I also studied Stanislavski and I know my way around units and motives . . . but Eric Berne's TA focuses on aspects that are incredibly useful. Unfortunately, many people in real life do play games.
One common game that many couple find themselves trapped within is the "Little Girl Lost" game. It's a rather common habitual response set in which the female in a relationship acts a bit on the childish side in order to manipulate her male partner into acting like a parent who then spoils the child. In essence, both partners feel like they're getting brownie points but are unfortunately stifling any real communication or relationship growth.
In Asia, where I live, the "Little Girl Lost" game has a particular expression and in the following video, I discuss game play in general and specifically the Chinese variation of "Little Girl Lost."
