Employer Costs of Unhealth Prevention and Healthy Worker Investments

As part of their long term plan in keeping employees healthy in order to foster a healthier more productive workspace, Washington and Lee University now subsidizes a number of health programs for employees.  One of those programs is to help smokers stop via hypnosis as well as beginning plans for a weight loss hypnosis group:

"W&L also pays half the cost of classes for smoking cessation
through hypnosis, and plans to start a weight loss hypnosis group."

This makes perfect since when you consider the costs of unhealth in the workplace:

"The research shows that healthy employees experience less sick
time, take fewer disability days and suffer less risk of premature
death," Snead said. There is also a reduction in workers compensation,
and what she calls "presenteeism," where employees are at work but not
getting anything accomplished because of stress in their lives. According
to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 75 percent of an
employer's health care costs and productivity losses are related to
employee lifestyle choices. And each dollar invested in wellness
programs saves three dollars in health care costs, according to the
Wellness Council of America.
