Vermont Legalizes Gay Marriage

Vermont has become the fourth US state to legalize gay marriage (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/04/07/AR2009040701663.html).  Of particular interest in this case is that it's the first state to legalize gay marriage with a vote from the legislature.  The governor vetoed the gay marriage bill which sent it back to the legislature where there were enough votes to override the veto (enough in the house and well more than enough in the senate).  This is a very good thing.  Massachusetts, Connecticut and Iowa are the other states that have legalized gay marriage (not just civil unions, but the real deal, marriage . . . a very good thing . . . in my opinion, that is).  Long time readers of this blog know that I have a bias on this issue . . . very strongly in favor of full marriage rights for gays and lesbians . . . I personally know so many gays who are thoughtful and loving folks who genuinely deserve the rights that come with longterm committed relationships.  Gay marriage in no way threatens the family or lessens the values of a nation, on the contrary, it strengthens those very values.  In my opinion.

All the best,
Brian
