Happy Thanksgiving . . .
. . . you know the food riots aren’t far away when you hear stories like this

While driving to work the other day and listening to the English-language radio, a story that’s particularly depressing came on about the number of Americans last year who were food-disadvantaged skyrocketed and things don’t look to be getting any better.  Close to thirty million Americans are relying on food stamps to survive (http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/usa-2008-the-great-depression-803095.html).  There are likely quite a few Americans who are food-disadvantaged who are not getting food stamps as well.

Enter a recent story from the Washington Post about a farm that opened its doors to gleaning only to be overrun by folks looking for free food . . . forty thousand people . . . http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/11/23/AR2008112302364.html . . . that’s a lot of people.

The food riot bit in the title of this post comes from the io9 reaction to this story.  The sentiment may not be far off.  Yes, indeed.  That was then, this is now.  Hellow, past, welcome to the future.

Happy Thanksgiving,
Brian
