As many of you know, in March I will be presenting a couple seminars for the Global Hypnosis eSummit (http://www.hypnosummit.com). One will be on Ideomotor Effect Processes while the other is on Gentle Rapid Hypnosis Inductions.
So many folks think of instant and rapid hypnosis as slam, bam, trance-you-ma’am sorts of things that rely upon invasive or scary shock components. Well, yes, they can be that way, but they don’t have to be.
When I perform an instant induction, most of the time it is based upon a paradigm of gentle interaction. Rarely do I do the big shouts and slams but more often than not will use a nice gentle approach that still relies upon a form of shock – a gentle neurological shift rather than a strong physical shock.
Here are a couple videos of some gentle variants of the classic hand drop induction. This first piece is of a young woman on her very first visit to the hypnosis chair. She had never been hypnotized before. I elected to go with the hand drop instant induction with her and as you can see it’s not rough at all but very gentle yet still with a powerful effect.

Later, the same young woman returned for another session and I used the same gentle instant process as a re-induction. Note that there is no need for shouting or slamming body parts about.

While some forms of instant and rapid induction can be very theatrical and are extremely appropriate for the stage or street, I have found that the skilled hypnotist needs to also have a number of gentle approaches in the toolbox for those persons or contexts where the showy approach is less than ideal.
