The Joys of Comment Spam

Since my blog and my webpages are fairly wellknown among hypnotists (check the Google page ranks, while the big commercial sites have nothing to worry about, my pages get pretty fair ranking particularly since we haven’t even optimized or cross promoted) . . . I get a lot of hypnotic traffic.

I also get a lot of spam on the blog.  For the mailing lists, I just set things to moderated status so the spam never sees the light of day.  For the blog, I don’t currently premoderate posts but check ’em after the fact.  However, recently, I’ve been getting more and more stealthspam from other hypnotists.

This morning I got a couple exactly the same from the same guy "Great Post! This Post gives me something to think about".  Well, maybe they were really great posts and he really did get something to think about . . . but . . . the comments were on these two posts . . . https://briandavidphillips.net/2007/01/brian_david_phi.html and https://briandavidphillips.net/2008/06/revolving-sched.html
. . . granted the first header post does have the kool countdown clock to the Singularity Convergence of the Mayan Endtime and McKenna’s Timewave Zero and the Technological Singularity Convergence . . . but there’s no comment and the rest is just a schedule for my upcoming hypnosis shows and courses . . . while the second has a breakdown of the hypnosis and Tarot courses I will be teaching this Summer with summaries.  However, I don’t think that’s really "thoughtworthy" stuff and honestly assume that the multiple comments were just an excuse to get one’s webpages in the comment links (when you click on a commenter’s name you get redirected to their webpages).

Usually, I just delete such stuff.  However, this time I had a Eureka moment of annoyance.

Regulars here and on my email lists I am really big on community building within the various hypnosis communities and part of that is commenting and discussing.  However, if all you want is your webpage out there then random comment stealthspam is just going to piss someone off and have ’em drop your comment and eventually ban you from participation.  A better strategy is to have your link in your sig and the like and then actually PARTICIPATE in the discussion by commenting with some insight and on topic.  This will have the double effect of getting your link out there AND folks who read the comment will be impressed or curious enough with your thinking that they will actually click on that link.

Now, if you feel that’s too much work or that you don’t have any insightful or worthwhile comments to make then . . . that’s not my problem . . . go take a basic course in critical thinking AND one in being a reasonably polite human.  Otherwise . . . FUCK OFF!

If you can’t participate in the community discussion like a grown up and all you want to do is spam, I honestly don’t want to be bothered with you.

All the best,
Brian
