Pelvic Pain and Hypnosis

A large number of women experience chronic pelvic pain.  Many times the exact nature of the pain is difficult to determine.  However, regardless of the source, an effective treatment for pelvic pain is hypnosis or guided imagery.  In many cases, guided imagery alone has proven to be more effective than medication . . .

When we’re in pain, we tend to tense our muscles and that makes the pain worse. But after several sessions of guided imagery patients learn to turn off their conscious minds, where their suffering is intensified, and connect with their subconscious mind. Gail Elliott Evo, Beaumont Integrative Medicine, said “They’ve learned how to quiet their mind and soften their body and elicit a relaxation and therefore lessen the pain response.” Donna Carrico is a nurse practitioner who specializes in working with pelvic pain. She was one of the researchers who tested the effectiveness of guided imagery and said they found significant decrease in pain and urgency. In fact, they found it to be one of the most effective treatments. “Using guided imagery alone was more effective than some of the medications we have them on,” she said.
