a different kind of believer

In a different kind of believer, Michael S. Roth writes an intriguing review of Ghost Hunters William James and the Search for Scientific Proof of Life After Death by Deborah Blum which is a fascinating tale of the work of psychology pioneer and esteemed author philosopher William James in the search for proof or anti-proof of psychic phenomenon, including life beyond the physical. James setup a research lab that endeavored to critically test mediums and expose fakes while hoping to shed light on those who seemed to possess genuine knowledge that they should not practically know, mostly mediums and the like. He knew fraud and tried to expose them at every turn but he was a hopeful skeptic. Roth’s review makes it sound like a very worthwhile read so I will be placing it on my want to snarf list.
