thousands of DLP Cinema® projectors deployments announced, digital cinema heads to the mainstream

While DLP setups are being deployed in thousands of screens worldwide . . . as DLP becomes even more pervasive, I would really like to see how the recent big news from IBM of cheap 3D for home DLP will affect the mix and see if 3D becomes even more pervasive or if the folks behind the 3D wave will try to monopolize things by keeping it system-specific to the Real-D and Dolby servers currently pushed. If Real-D’s Digital 3D system was only installed in eighty-some theatres while other DLP systems are being installed at much higher penetration (thousands of screens in the US and thousands in Ireland, for example), it would be very nice if the folks at IBM could demonstrate their cheap conversion process and technology for those screens as well (for home systems, IBM says current sets should be able to be converted for full stereoscopic passive glasses display at US$1000 or less and manufacturing new systems would only add about US$20 or so . . . this is far less than the US$85,000 cost of the Real-D/Dolby-based system . . . albeit, that includes much more than just the stereoscopic element). Hopefully, at least some of the tech from IBM will cross over to allow for less expensive conversions of current theatres and perhaps break open for a number of manufacturers to compete in the marketplace while maintaining a consistent and useable standard.
