Michael Turton reports on a rather screwed up bit of academic tomfoolery that says that the Fascination of Western Men for Asian Women is Paedophilia. Uhm. No, it isn’t.

It’s excitation with the other, the exotic . . . perhaps . . . albeit, that depends on where one lives and how one interprets one’s context.

Well . . . that’s one take . . . colonial opression and pedophilia . . . well, I guess I’ll hve to put that in the same list of reasons people have given me for my wife having married me: "green card" (which she doesn’t have and we’ve been together for well over a decade) and "penis size" (a full professor at a national university here told me that it’s obvious that Chinese women marry White guys because they have bigger penises than Chinese guys and to prove his point he told me that two of his Chinese friends married White women in the US and both couples were divorced and in both cases the women said the guys had small penises – I hope you can see the fault in the logic) . . . don’t get me wrong, I would like to think my wife does indeed appreciate my penis and I do enjoy sharing it with her, but that certainly isn’t her only reason for wanting to be with me and I can assure you that even though she is Asian, she certainly has nothing whatsoever to remind one of a prepubescent child as she is most certainly ALL woman and an extremely attractive one at that . . . sometimes the mind boggles. I married my wife for a whole bunch of reasons (the chief one being I actually do love her) and likewise she married me for a number (she tells me that love is indeed a big part of the equation) but the quirky reasons aren’t even in the same ballpark. Sheesh.

I would suggest that one can’t really draw conclusions about any one relationship based upon stereotypes or generalizations. In all actuality, the major factor for relationships is proximity followed by opportunity and context. Western Men attracted to Asian Women may or may not be fixated – just as anyone else attracted to a particular type of person may or may not be fixated – but they certainly are not pedophiles because of that attraction. Certainly, no one would accuse Asian Men who find Asian Women attractive to be pedophiles.
