Batman Begins . . . kicks butt . . .
. . . and other movie bits

Saw Batman Begins yesterday . . . best Batman movie ever made. This was the real Dark Knight . . . he was absolutely fucking scary, fucked up and scary. Glad we didn’t take Kaye but really good. Had a rather large amount of cola before and during the film but did NOT notice I needed to pee until the end credits and then suddenly noticed just how bad I had to go and it was painful walking from the auditorium to the toilets . . . disassociated so completely by being so incredibly engrossed in the film. Wow.  It isn’t just a cartoony retelling of Batman’s story that is very engrossing and very very well done.

Disappointed with Sin City . . . the advertisements made it seem less cartoony and more like the comic which kicks ass. The whole advertising campaign was bait and switch with focus on Bruce Wilis and Jessica Alba with very little to do with Marv even though his story is the main one. Too campy. These are really good actors and they made everything too cardboard with no depth. Although . . . in all fairness . . . Lorraine says the film is a very literal adaptation of the comicbook but that with the comic your imagination has more room to fill in the blanks and make for a richer deeper experience. Fair point.

Looking forward to Fantastic Four. Looks like it should be fun.

Sorry that War of the Worlds won’t be set in the novel but looks like a Mars Attacks meets Independance Day meets Signs. We’ll see. Dakota is really something. I hope she is able to make the transition from child prodigy to adult acress without becoming a fucked up hasbeen. She’s very talented.

A buddy of mine, a wellknown and gifted novelist best known for his work within the Star Trek franchise, just posted to our private buddy’s list for everyone to go out and watch Firefly right now in preparation for the uberwondrous experience that will be Serenity. He is right about Firefly . . . if you haven’t seen the series . . . GET THE DVD NOW. It has never been broadcast on this side of the big pond but got the DVDs as soon as they came out. Fox screwed up big time on that show (they purposefully showed it out of sequence and killed it to punish Whedon and once again demonstrate their lack of judgement). This series kicks ass . . . even if the actors can’t pronounce Chinese for shit (honestly, I get the impression their Chinese language coach doesn’t actually speak the language well . . . or at least she doesn’t know how to get across the idea that Chinese is a musical language with tones that change the meanings . . . professional actors should be able to handle mimicking the sounds if they are told there are four tones in Mandarin that change meanings so Ma1 Ma2 Ma3 and Ma4 (same sound with different inflections) all have different meanings. When we watched it the first time I had to tell Lorraine and Kaye what the Chinese was that was being spoken as I’m used to hearing really shitty pronunciation of English and Chinese and have a very forgiving ear. I will show the program to my students and they can rarely figure out what the Chinese is. 🙂 Do keep in mind my students are all native speakers of Chinese. However, even with the language difficulties the show just plain rocks and all the buzz on Serenity is that it’s going to kick some right royal ass. Do yourself a favor and get the DVD set and watch the show in the intended order, not the order the facist bullyboy network broadcast it in. Better than good stuff, it’s Tony the Tiger Grrreat!

See:

Good stuff, Maynard!

All the best,
Brian
