The Big Picture . . .
. . . Filmmakers Assess the State of the Giant Screen

Take a look at The Big Picture: Filmmakers Assess the State of the Giant Screen . . . it’s an piece from 1999 which looks into the future of IMAX and other large format venues and it is nice to see that some of the predictions about the nature of the audience are now being confirmed . . . the future of cinema is digital and 3D . . . of course, for theatres that are not large format, film projection is still with us and will be around for awhile as folks just can’t convert that cheaply or quickly . . . however, there are solutions available to convert to quality polarised projection at the fraction of former costs and I am told the anachrome process works well for film projection as well (waiting to see samples but the buzz is very good) the same folks have conversion kits for both types of theatres (see Anachrome) . . . certainly in markets where digital screens are scarce or cost-prohibitive such systems may be worthwhile.
