In the graduate course in Gothic and Horror fiction that I am teaching this term, we’ve been doing a lot of looking into how language creates emotional states that the horror writer takes advantage of, the principles of creating psychological terror, so to speak . . . well, film is even easier to create emotional states with . . . take a look at what happens when a group of Japanese girls watch The Ring . . . I’ve seen the same reactions in my own classes numbers of time.
