Star Trek Goes Digital

This is a bit nifty neat . . . Star Trek Enterprise has gone digital . . . that is, the fourth season of the show is being shot entirely with new high definition digital television equipment with no film stock in use. This means the production can shoot more footage faster and within budget. While those of us who watch the show . . . okay, I depend upon folks in the US to get copies for me as it is not broadcast here . . . won’t notice a big difference, the production will begin changing how certain things are approached.

Other big news . . . some old stalwarts will be making showing up in the new season as their own ancestors. Brent Spiner, who played Data, will be playing an ancestor of the inventor of the familiar character. William Shatner is also likely to be showing up playing an ancestor of everone’s favorite womanizing committment-challenged Admiral busted back down to Captain James Tiberius Kirk.

Personally, I’m hopeful for more Vulcan babes and sonic showers . . . well, a guy can dream.

The series went through some very big changes in the last season, changes that make it very unlikely they can return to the pre-Xindi story arc days . . . it should be very interesting to see what happens. Between you folks, the walls, and the Klingons, I like this series a lot . . . big time . . . it’s pretty much my favorite Star Trek series since the original series . . . of course, since I haven’t actually seen Deep Space Nine yet, I haven’t seen everything to compare . . . but I sure have seen a lot . . . and I will finally get to see DS9 as I picked up the entire series along with all of Next Generation on DVD during our last vacation (yes, that’s a lot of television slated in my future, but as I am quite the Trekker, I am looking forward to it).
