War on Porn

Ron at See Lai, notes there’s a lot popping up of late about the so-called War On Porn?.

See Daze Reader, Eros Blog, Instapundit, and this article.

The thing about this whole war on porn thing is tha Ashcroft and company are throwing out the community standards rules for the federal level. By using tricks rather than hard arguments – such as ordering porn from one community in a state with different standards than the one where the product is produced and sold – the FBI is imposing false standards on the entire nation which do NOT reflect the standards of the nation at large.

The idea of going after mainstream entertainment as porn is just plain silly.

Janet Reno had a much better idea . . . leave the mainstream porn to consumers, the market decides what’s appropriate . . . and go after the real scum like the child porn producers (different set of laws so the folks who claim Ashcroft is being mis-read are just plain wrong here). Sure, porn spammers should be prosecuted as should the scammers and the popup hell producers . . . but the rest of it is not being inflicted upon folks . . . people are inviting adult entertainment into their homes.

If Ashcroft and his band are conservative regarding adult entertainment . . . and obviously they are . . . then they don’t have to watch it. They don’t have to invite it into their homes. It’s not being forced upon them.

Regulating behaviour and practices that go against the norm or endanger others is one thing. However, imposing one’s moral or religious views upon others when the nation as a whole is obviously okay with porn given the huge consumer base, that’s just wrong. Big Brother anyone?
