welcome to the waking dream . . .

Welcome to Waking Dreams. I am Brian David Phillips, Ph.D., C.H., and I will be your guide into the fascinating world of hypnosis and trancework. In the following pages you will find links to the resource pages and galleries for Waking Dreams. This site has information and examples of Focused Trance ThoughtformsHypnosisGuided ImageryDeep Relaxation Trigger Response Conditioning, and other forms of trancework. It also has information on how you can contact me for trance-related services and hypnosis sessions as well as resources where you can purchase my trance and hypnosis related products. This site includes an extensive section of resources for hypnotists.

I do trancework in a variety of contexts . . . therapeutic, educational, recreational, and for entertainment. My entertainment hypnosis show is currently theonly nightlife comedy hypnosis show in Taiwan. I am skilled at a variety of trance-based modalities such as Waking Dreams, Focused Trance Thoughtforms, Hypnosis, Guided Imagery, Meditation, Hyperempria, Creative Visualization, Neurolinguistic Programming, Active Imagination, and other approaches. I don’t do counselling work per se nor do I do psychotherapy. What I do is more akin to coaching or mentoring utilizing focused trance. Trancework uses trance, suggestion and instruction in autotrance or self-hypnosis to adjust and correct unwanted habits of thought, feeling and behavior or to install new beliefs or habits or improve skills. Psychotherapy is the diagnosis and conversational treatment of mental disease. In other words, a psychotherapist treats people who have been diagnosed with some type of mental illness while a tranceworker or waking dream guide or hypnotist addresses the habits of normal people wishing to improve their lives. As per my scope of practice statements, while I am certainly qualified and skilled in trance-based modalities and can help folks supplement their care from a licensed practitioner of the healing arts, I will not work with folks for issues related to medical health-based problems or illness or to psychiatric disorders without an express referral from an appropriate licensed health-care professional or psychologist. A noted psychologist’s comparative study of effectiveness reports in psychology and psychotherapy literature revealed that of the major therapeutic approaches, hypnosis is one of the most effective (see Alfred A. Barrios, PhD, in Psychotherapy Magazine, v7n1, and in Psychotherapy: Theory, Research, and Practice, Spring 1970):

  • Psychoanalysis: 38% recovery after 600 sessions.
  • Behavior Therapy: 72% recovery after 22 sessions.
  • Hypnotherapy: 93% recovery after 6 sessions.

While other forms of focused trance modalities were not included in this study, they could reasonably expected to score similarly as high given the shared strengths of the forms.

I am a Focused Trance GuideCertified Focused Trance Guide Instructor Trainer, and Board Certified Hypnotist (Certified Hypnotherapist and Certified Hypnosis Instructor Trainer) with broad experience in trance modalities of various types. In addition to my work as a focused trance guide, hypnotherapist, a trance-based performance hypnosis sepcialist, and as a trance modality trainer, I am the Founder and current President of the Society of Experiential Trance. (SET).

In addition to hypnosis and focused trance services, I also offer very special metaphysical trance services via a form of trance wizardry that takes ancient occult tools and transformst them into contemporary context via a special form of introspective focused trance. In this endeavor, I use the tools of the Wizard’s trade . . . Tarot, crystal ball, rune, want, and more . . . with a practical edge and a contemporary twist. As a “trance wizard” I provide both introspective focused trance experiences and intuitive readings.

As Head Pastor of the Church of Universal Loving Tranceformation, I work within the Ministry of Ecstatic eXperiential Trance in which we endeavor to bring folks closer to the divine through ecstatic trancework. In that regard, I have developed and practice a number of trance techniques for introspective spiritual connectedness and awareness.

I am a very experienced and highly qualified professional educator and academic and am an Associate Professor in the English Department at National Chengchi University, a prestigious university in Taiwan. Please note that while I use the title “Dr. Phillips” for my university position, my doctorate is not in hypnosis or hypnotherapy (no such accredited degrees exist), nor am I a licensed psychologist or medical doctor.

As a focused trance guide and lay hypnotist, a person qualified in hypnosis and hypnotherapy without the need of an advanced degree related to medicine or psychology, I limit the scope of my hypnotic work to a particular range of issues. I will not work with you for clinical psychiatric, psychological, or medical issues without a referral from a licensed practitioner. Trancework of any type should never replace the competent care of a qualified healthcare practitioner. However, trancework can be a very valuable supplement to such care. Anyone who tells you otherwise, is putting you at risk. Run, don’t walk, to the nearest exit.

However, I can and will work with you for a very wide variety of issues. If in doubt, contact me and I will let you know if focused trancework can help with your specific questions. It probably can!

I hold a doctorate (Ph.D.) degree in English/Comparative Literature from National Taiwan University with a dissertation in Interactive Drama: Critical Perspectives on Freeform Role Plays as Drama. I also have both BA and MA degrees in Theatre/Communication so my early academic work and experience serves me well in performance-based focused trancework and hypnosis for issues ranging from stage fright to performance skill enhancement to much much more in addition to more standard trancework related issues.

If you are in the Taipei, Taiwan, area and would like to schedule a session with me, attend one of my trainings, or book a show, feel free to email me. All of my sessions, programs, and trainings are conducted in English. If you need Chinese services, you may wish to consult the Chinese resource pages here and contact Lorraine for more information.

Feel free to check the free resource sections often as I frequently add new recordings and rotate the selctions.

There are a number of entertaining and educational videos in the video portion of the webpage for those who would like to see genuine hypnosis in action.

For more in-depth and very powerful trance-based changework programs, see my services and products pages. For more information, feel free to email me at brian@briandavidphillips.com. Yes, just as my in-person hypnosis and trancework sessions may cover a very wide variety of issues, tailoring the program to the client’s needs, I can create custom focused trance, hypnosis, or guided imagery recordings on CD for those who wish something I have not yet published. Contact me for details, outlining your request. Custom recordings come in two tiers, material that is non-exclusive that I may offer to others and material that is exclusive for the client alone.

In any case, feel free to look around these pages . . . and come back often . . . the dream only gets better.

Once again . . . welcome to the waking dream . . . now, breathe in, breathe out, relax, and . . . d r e a m . . . and . . . enjoy.

All the best,
Brian David Phillips, Ph.D., C.H.

I had not heard of the Alfred A. Barrios, PhD, in Psychotherapy Magazine, v7n1, and in Psychotherapy: Theory, Research, and Practice, Spring 1970 study mentioned, very interesting while also powerful information to know.
