Do programs that pay people to lose weight really work?

Lenny Bernstein at the Washington Post writes and inciteful and interesting piece that asks the question “Do programs that pay people to lose weight really work?” (http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/wellness/do-programs-that-pay-people-to-lose-weight-really-work/2011/10/06/gIQAiIABbL_story.html).

The answer isn’t simple or clearcut but there is definitely promise for many that such programs to work and more and more businesses are opting into new incentive programs of this type. Finding that the payout has to be more than a small US$50 bet with a friend but a genuine commitment to change at work with co-workers who have a stake in your positive change. Many of these programs now offer as much as US$10,000 to employees who lose weight, reaching a goal weight withing the healthy range for their height and age. Companies – even small companies – are finding that paying out short term bonus incentives like that costs less in the long run than healthcare costs.

Of course, one way to help folks lose weight is hypnosis – ideally in-person sessions with a competent hypnotist but many folks do find some positive change with hypnosis audio recordings as well.

But . . . the motivation for change has to be genuine.
