Asking your volunteers to imagine themselves in a movie theatre or seeing movies of various types is a classic opener for group effects in a hypnosis show. This gets the ball rolling and we can see quickly who are more responsive volunteers are. I tend to use a sequence similar to that used by a number of classic hypnotists, albeit I do put my volunteers on a bus for this as part of a longer imagination intensification sequence.

Typically, the sequence is to go from funny movie to scary movie and some folks will then add sexy movie. With sexy movie, you can also add in the “someone you know is in the movie” which becomes the volunteer which can lead to interesting interview questions. Not always, but enough to be common, I will also add in the bit of stating the sexy movie the volunteers are in is a gay and lesbian movie. Obviously, that sort of thing is not acceptable in all venues and contexts so know your audience and stick to expectations.
