Here is another entry in our ongoing series of stage hypnosis technique discussions that will be running through to the New Year. This time around we’re going to look at playing with names.
A standard stage hypnosis gag is to play with someone’s name . . . having them forget it or change it . . . I love this gag as it’s a lot of fun and really demonstrates the power of the mind.
Typically, hypnotize the volunteer and verify experiential hypnosis or somnambulism then give the suggestion that they’ve forgotten their names. Now, some folks won’t do this gag for fear that it won’t work . . . if your volunteer doesn’t respond as suggested it’s a great opportunity to point out to the audience that everyone’s imagination is different.
You can also switch immediately into a mouth catalepsy so that they may remember their names but they can’t say it because the mouth is relaxed . . . then that can be shifted into genuine amnesia with most folks.
Once the name has been changed, shift into a name replacement . . . I will pluck a new name out of the air and give it to the volunteer – usually Snoopy or Tinkerbell as those are really funny. Once I’ve played a bit with that, I will typically return the original name (remember to always do that) with a power or confidence suggestion so that when they say their name they feel great (it’s nice to give you volunteers a gift for being such great sports).
