The Power of Hypnosis lecture by Peter Naish

Peter Naish of Open University delivers a lecture on The Power of Hypnosis at the Dana Centre. While I found the connections with schizophrenia fascinating I still disagree with some of his conclusions about it not being a particularly valuable adaptation. My take on the subject that it has been highly valuable and when we note that highly successful people are also highly suggestible, it seems even more clear (his normal distribution comment only works for standardized formal “tests” that don’t take into account individualized responsiveness as the more personalized adaptive approaches do). I was flabbergasted at his seeming amazement that a colleague could “try” hypnosis for pain relief in dentistry . . . these folks are “experts” but have so little faith in it being effective that it is almost amazing that they get any positive results.
