I have posted about Win Eiam-ong and his The Art of Hypno-Sculpture a few times before but a recent discussion on one of the all too many hypnosis discussion lists I am a member of prompts a new posting. As regular readers here know, I have taught a LOT of Walkabout Trance style street hypnosis and in my courses, I hit hard on the idea of informed consent . . . that is always always always get complete prior consent from folks you work with. Some folks go outside that box . . . some go outside the box into new and interesting ways and some go to creepy town.
Sometimes you just have to marvel at another performer’s bit. The Art of Hypno-Sculpture is an elegant, quirky, and interesting idea that takes a rather unorthodox approach to street trance and performance (although, it does step outside areas of consent that I am comfortable with). Basically, international entertainer Win Eiam-ong (aka Win the Mentalist and Master Hypnotist, Youtube), walks up to folks in major cities around the globe and runs an instant or rapid hypnotic induction on them – typically, a speed modification of an Ericksonian "handshake induction" style instant using a patten interrupt. Once he’s got the person in state, he poses them as if they are statues and walks away. Some of his "sculptures are rather complex and others simple. Before anyone cries foul, he doesn’t abandon them, he is off camera but the cameraman keeps video rolling until the folks spontaneously come out of state and wonder what just happened. It’s an interesting bit, albeit invasive at times (he does have video of it not working as well). So, here are Win’s hypno-sculptures for your enjoyment and amusement and puzzlement . . .

The video quality is not as good and the session doesn’t work as well . . . however, it’s a complex set with three persons and a bystander (distractant) sitting amongst them.

It’s interesting that Win has chosen some religious figures and celebrities for his hypno-sculpture bits in England. This guy is a perfect choice for the Jesus motif, albeit, Win does recognize that some folks might take unintended offence at the religious iconography.

One thing that intrigues me with these videos is that the passersby who are awfully close to the artist and his lviing canvas don’t seem to notice or care when folks are left with eyes closed in weird positions. Ah, the joys of metrourbansprawl living.

I got a kick out of this one. Gave me a nice dejavu experience from when I did my own Walkabout Trance (here) and Street Hypnosis (here) in Taipei. Since my Chinese sucks, I had to work through an interpreter most of the time for street hypnosis. This is something that doesn’t work when doing the handshake as you need to fire in the suggestions immediately while the conscious mind is distracted, the interpretation gets in the way. So, like Win, I have to find folks who speak English to do my bit. The video shows some "lost in translation" "babel" moments then he finds a young woman who speaks English and gets a rather interesting hypno-sculpture out of the meeting. This is one of my favorites of the series.

Just so we don’t question whether or not he’s a fake, Win shows us a failure (in addition to the no-go’s in the Japanese piece above).
Of course, that should reinforce the idea that one might admire what he’s done here, it’s probably not a very good idea to follow his example . . . especially those of you in areas where folks may carry around weapons and not be particularly friendly toward random hypnotists accosting them.
