As with all studies, keep in mind this is NOT the last word BUT it is certainly very very promising. A whole lot of promising.
Discussing brand new research on the effects of hypnotic trancework on the spread of HIV within AIDS patients, Kumar Anand reports very promising outcomes in a peer-reviewed study by Urmi Nanda Biswas, professor and head of the Psychology Department at Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, who conducted the research – Positive Thought Induction for Arresting Disease Progression: A Hypnotherapeutic Application in HIV/AIDS – which has been published in the formal research journal Psychological Studies, 56(2):192-205. DOI:10.1007/s12646-011-0086-x (access the paper here).
While suggesting folks take all results with a grain or bucket or ocean of salt, I would also suggest that this is a rather big deal. No, her research does not indicate hypnosis as some magickal cure of AIDS (if anyone tells you they can cure your disease of any type with hypnosis alone, run don’t walk away as they’re probably a quack or deluded or worse – even though hypnosis has indeed been shown to help the body’s immune system fight off certain types of ailments). In her research Biswas has, however, shown a promising correlation if not causation for the slowdown of AIDS progression in patients using hypnotherapy as one of several interventions. Miracle Cure? No. Big Deal? Yes.
This particular research study in health psychology at the MS University has established that the virus that causes AIDS by attacking a person’s immune system can in some ways be prevented from spreading and the person can live a healthy life by undergoing regular clinical hypnotherapy — a hypnotic process that is used to alter a person’s thought process to positively affect his immune system (note the specific nature of the suggestions used in the study).
The research started started in 2008 as a pilot project funded by the state government, but the scope was limited as only a small, experimental group of HIV-affected persons were involved (this is important, limited in nature). The patients underwent hypnotherapy sessions and their blood test conducted regularly to check its effect on their CD4 count. “The UGC fund helped us increase the scope of the study by involving a control group of 40 patients on whom we conducted the study to establish that hypnotherapy is an effective scientific therapy for them,” head of MSU’s psychology department, Urmi Nanda Biswas, who conducted the research, said.
While the hypnotherapy process used within the study is typically used to prevent lifestyle-related diseases, such as asthma, dermatology, hyper-tension and diabetes, among others, this is the first time that a detailed, clinical trial has established that an HIV-positive person’s immune system can be assisted to prevent or impede the process of breaking down and the patient’s mental health improved with the regular use of hypnotherapy (assistance in immune stengthening and in improving mental health are long known benefits of hypnosis and focused trancework of various types). The research group’s findings will be presented at the 28th International Congress of Applied Psychology to be held in Paris next month.
“No research had been done before that could establish that the CD4 count of a person suffering from HIV virus could be enhanced using hypnotherapy, a process used in health psychology. The CD4 count is an immune marker found in a person’s body that is adversely affected due to the HIV virus leading to AIDS,” Biswas said, adding that the research has also validated hypnotherapy as a scientific therapy (albeit, readers here know hypnosis has been validated in that respect for quite some time despite the negative impression held in popular culture and within some uninformed academic circles).
When projecting impact possibilities, Biswas seems a bit more optimistic than perhaps the study suggests (remember, it’s a promising study, NOT a definitive one): While lifelong use of anti-retroviral drugs helps an HIV-positive patient lead a healthy life by preventing the virus from spreading, affording medication is not easy for all patients. Hypnotherapy, on the other hand, does not require any medication and is a no-cost therapy that can help arrest the disease if given continuously, Biswas said. “Hypnotherapy helps in managing stress and programming mind to engage in positive thoughts, thereby reducing stress which affects a person’s immune parameters. In HIV positive patients, it helps induce positive thoughts and prevent spread of disease. We hope the process will be accepted by the medical fraternity,” Biswas said.
