As regular readers here know, I absolutely love spontaneous and creative approaches to hypnosis. Sure, I can recite a ton of learned patterns, processes, and techniques like the next guy, well maybe a bit more than the next guy . . . but . . . I really love to be in a situation where you can just let your creative juices flow and take whatever is given in a situation and play with it as a hypnotic process in its own right.
I love teaching some quirky fun and incredibly useful approaches to suggestibility effects and imagination games (see the Free Mindgames Video Series on this very site) one of the rather fun exercises I will be using in the class which for my walkabout street hypnosis classes I even have students go out into the world to challenge themselves with is the TRANCE CALL OUT. When I teach classes, I will sometimes demonstrate it as a way of showing that Dave Elman’s mantra that “anything can be an induction” is very true (once you’ve got all the other operators in place).
The way to play the game is to have someone call out an object, idea, or concept and within a few seconds begin using whatever the challenge is as the basis for a hypnotic induction.
Students who have taken my ADVANCED HYPNOSIS THEORY course from the Hypnosis Practitioners Training Institute (HPTI) which I co-teach with Scott Sandland will recall my demonstration of this very game in which I received the call out of ELEPHANT and the resulting rather elegant Elephant Induction that resulted from it.
In the following video, I ask for a call out and get glass (the puppy dog comments are referencing a previous event in the seminar). Here’s the result . . .
It’s playful but also very effective. I have since used this very same process a number of times and have tweaked it along the ways as a more formalized induction but this is the first time (those who have my “Exotic Hypnosis Inductions” video set will recognize it, albeit not this footage).
The footage above was shot by a student during my Speed Hypnosis Techniques course taught in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in March 2009.
Let’s take a look at a couple more examples of improvisational hypnosis based upon shoutouts.
In this video, I ask for a call out and since the young woman is wearing a hairband in her hair, some of the students in the class thought they’d get a little tricky with the suggestion and called out “hairband” little realizing that’s actually part of the point of the exercise (to engender a willingness and competence to just jump in an effectively use anything in the environment to create the context for a positive trance session . . . trust me, once you’ve publicly done a hypnosis induction based upon the suggestion of a toilet seat, anything and everything else is a walk in the park)
Here’s the hairband hypnosis induction resulting from this particular exercise . . .
That was fun and a half!
The footage above was shot by a student during my Speed Hypnosis Techniques course taught in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in March 2009.
Let’s change countries for another example, this one not just an induction but an improvisation intended for positive therapeutic changework as well.
Continuing with a bit more in terms of our short series of improvisational hypnosis clips, this time with a changework twist instead of just as a call challenge for the induction proper . . . Navin Prabhakar (yes that Navin Prabhakar [http://www.navinprabhakar.com], the famous Indian comedian, actor, and singer) attended the Speed Hypnosis Techniques workshop I taught in Mumbai, India, and volunteered to be trance partner for the demonstration of the Desired Intention Memory Box creative trance process.
Those of you familiar with my improvisational hypnosis approaches know that I like to use this challenge technique that requires a person to spontaneously create new inductions or processes on the spur of the moment . . . this is one of those improvisational processes, and so while the Desired Intention Memory Box induction and process turned out to be a rather nice and powerful process, this is the first time it has ever been publicly demonstrated as I’m making it up as I go along, working with the feedback given to me by the trance partner.
Navin turned out to be a wonderful trance partner and the process went beautifully, from the creative induction through the powerful changework pattern.
Sorry for the poor lighting, but we were not setup to video this particular session but went ahead anyway as a number of the demonstrations were unique and the folks in the Mumbai seminar were very wonderful (as were the folks in the other cities I toured during that trip, for that matter). The whole thing was a great experience.
As it turned out, every single one of the demonstration improvisational challenge trances that I did in our India courses turned out to be extremely beautiful processes. Some were on video but most were not. The Manifesting Abundance Balloons was particularly a “WOW” type experience but I am also partial to the rather interesting Elephant Induction I performed.
This particular video is part of a series of highlights filmed during various of my Speed Hypnosis Techniques workshops in India from Aug. 30 through Sept. 7, 2008, in a three city teaching tour (Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore). In addition to the Speed Hypnosis workshop Navin also attended a special actors trancework session at Kishore Namit Kapoor‘s Acting Institute (web) that I was invited to co-present with my friend Pradeep Aggarwal (web) who was my local partner for that particular delightful hypnotic tour of India. Those familiar with my work, know my approach to professional acting instruction includes trancework – see our trance-acting category on this site.
Obviously, as a training exercise the IMPROVISATIONAL HYPNOSIS TRANCE CALL OUT is a great way for folks to really learn how to really take control of the trance session and use contextual and environmental factors in order to enhance the imaginative involvement of the trance partner.
Obviously, in intimate or therapeutic contexts, this sort of improvisational spontaneity can be very useful as one works the hypnotist-client feedback loop to enhance trance partner experience. I’ve even used this sort of approach in stage shows or entertainment hypnosis presentations – walking down the row of volunteers and seamslessly improvising a completely new induction for each one based upon audience shoutouts. As a walkabout trance challenge setup it can be amazingly freeing once one gets over the first bump or two of trusting yourself to let go and just go with it and be playful and allow the trance partner to playfully experience things as you go along.
