Yep, you read the headline right . . . doctors have invented an orgasm machine. A device is implanted on the spine of an anorgasmic woman. When a remote button is pushed, the woman then experiences powerful orgasms.
Regular readers here know I’ve a keen interest in orgasms – not just for their awesomeness and they are pretty awesome – but also for how helping folks who have previous difficulty with orgasms can be very rewarding work as it helps them get in touch with a part of themselves that is important and how it can help enhance their intimacy levels in their personal relationships.
So, when I first read about the medical work on spinal implants years ago, it piqued my interest . . . and the implants are back in the news . . . this really is an orgazmatron . . . of sorts. Plug in, turn on, push the button, and boom boom boom orgasm time!
Obviously, this can help a lot of women who have serious difficulties with orgasm.
Scientists have devised a machine that can help women achieve ’emphatic’ orgasms at the push of a button.
Slightly smaller than a packet of cigarettes, the device uses electrodes attached to the patients spine, with orgasms being triggered by a remote control.
The machine is not intended for a mass market looking to spice up their day at whim or expedite their sexual encounters however, but for women who normally struggle to achieve orgasm.
North Caroline surgeon Stuart Meloy told New Scientist how he conjured up the idea while performing a procedure on a female patient.
“I was placing the electrodes and suddenly the woman started exclaiming emphatically,” he said. “I asked her what was up and she said, ‘You’re going to have to teach my husband to do that’.”
The machine that delivers an orgasm at the push of a button has been patented in the US. The implant could help women whose lives have been blighted by an inability to achieve orgasms naturally.
Orgasmic dysfunction is not uncommon among women, says Julia Cole, a psychosexual therapist and consultant with Relate, the relationship counselling service. And a number of issues can cause it, says Jim Pfaus, who studies the neurobiology of sexual behaviour at Concordia University in Montreal.
“Some women confuse what’s called sympathetic arousal, like increased heart rate, clammy hands, nerves and so on, with fear,” he explains. “That makes them want to get out of the situation.” Psychotherapy is a common treatment for the condition, although if anxiety is a factor, patients may also be prescribed valium. “But valium can actually delay orgasm,” says Pfaus.
The patient remains conscious during the operation to help the surgeon find the best position for the electrodes. Stuart Meloy, a surgeon at Piedmont Anesthesia and Pain Consultants in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, made the breakthrough came one day when he failed to hit the right spot and the rest is history as he quickly developed a prototype.
The surgery is obviously invasive so the procedure is not for everyone as the following illustration shows:
Meloy believes the device could help couples overcome problems caused by orgasmic dysfunction. “If you’ve got a couple who’ve been together for a while and it’s just not happening any more, maybe they’ll get through it a bit easier with this,” he says.
Cole agrees that some women would try it if they felt the problem was severe enough. “I feel about this the way I feel about Viagra,” says Cole. “It may help some people, but they should also address the underlying reasons for the problem.”
Like Cole, I have reservations about invasive surgery along the lines of a pacemaker for orgasm enhancement and strongly suggest folks try other alternatives first. Oh, while the spinal implant orgasm machine is predominately aimed at women, the PSYVIBE is not gender-specific. It also has all the advantages of the spinal implant – and more – without the dangers of major surgery. Honestly, I would strongly suggest folks give a psychological approach via experiential hypnosis a go before going through the pain and expense of a dangerous surgical procedure. The worst that can happen with something like a PsyVibe process is it doesn’t work for a particular individual. The worst that can happen when spinal surgery goes wrong? Google it, it isn’t pretty.
