Brian David Phillips performs an alternate version of JABBERWOCKY for his students as post-reference for the Blocked and Memorized Poetical Performance Project for the Theatre Acting, Directing, and Production course taught by Rev. Dr. Brian David Phillips at National Chengchi University. Note that this is not a serious performance set but a series of one-take playful interpretations improvised in the moment with no pre-preparation on character other than line memorization. Students should find that memorization for such a short poem is not difficult and should not take much time and that once the words are committed to memory, they can play with performance options, including voices, diction, and personality.
Lewis Carroll
(from Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There, 1872)
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
“Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!”
He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought —
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.
And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!
One, two! One, two!
And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.
“And, has thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!’
He chortled in his joy.
`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
Just for fun, this video was shot in 3D and can be viewed in 2D or 3D, just choose the appropriate format. If you don’t have a 3D system, then choose 3D Off and you can watch in 2D. IF you have issues with Google Chrome, then use Safari or Firefox. It seems google has not completely corrected issues they have (seriously, it’s weird that Chrome has the most problems of the major browsers since Google owns youtube but that’s exactly what is happening). The video can be viewed in 720p so if you only have the 360 option, check for the HD version in settings.
