The first four minutes of the new movie Now You See Me is out and in it we get to see Woody Harrelson playing a mentalist slash street hypnotist who takes his act a bit beyond the typical. He uses a classic speed induction – yep, one that I teach – to hypnotize a woman and gives her the suggestion that her feet are firmly stuck to the floor and her mouth is glued shut. He then takes things a bit further and goes to the husband and uses a mentalism process that is a combination of cold reading and ideomotor reading to discern that the husband has been having an affair with the wife’s sister (stage mentalist Banachek does a similar bit with the alphabet reading – without the creepy blackmail, that is – actually Banachek’s book on psychophysiological thought reading is wonderful and I learned a lot for my own ideomotor reading through it).

I absolutely love magic and adore closeup street mentalism so I would be quite looking forward to this movie even without the addition of street hypnosis to the mix but that just seals the deal.

Because of my background, I know the mechanics of a number of the effects being shown here and it’s still wonderful . . . quite like that the actors are doing a bit of genuine prestidigitation as well instead of relying upon digital effects (lots of that too) or doubles (I suspect some of that as well). Good fun.
