COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course will introduce students to the basic concepts and workings of critical thinking as well as principles of social influence and social psychology as related to critical thought and perception, demonstrate and explain specific techniques, and create a foundation for practical application of theory in a variety of contexts within their professional and social lives. The emphasis of this course is preparation for the use of critical thought and the ethical application of social psychology and influence methods in one’s professional practice. Aproximately 8 hours of pre-recorded video and 2 hours of Live Online Class Discussion per week.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

The primary goal of this course is to prepare students for the successful application of critical thinking by providing a solid foundation in the following areas:

  • An understanding of the History of the Study of Rhetorical Forms.
  • Ethical and Non-Ethical Approaches to Critical Influence (Quintilian versus Machiavelli).
  • A basic review of Logic and Critical Thought.
  • A core understanding of Rhetorical Forms and Argumentational Strategies.
  • An understanding of the use and misuse of principles and techniques from the fields of Social Influence, Social Psychology, and Social Engineering.

REQUIRED TEXT (to be purchased seperately)

  • Critical Thinking: A Concise Guide, Tracy Bowell and Gary Kemp.
  • Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion, Robert Cialdini.
  • WEEK 1 — Bowell & Kemp: 1-7
  • WEEK 2 — Cialdini: 1-4
  • WEEK 2 — Cialdini: 5-7

LECTURES

Each week will have a unique portfolio of video lectures. You will be provided with links to access each weeks lectures. Live class discussions will focus on clarification of the week’s reading and lecture material so pace your lecture viewing appropriately.

ONLINE CLASS DISCUSSIONS

Class will meet for one hour in the “HPTI webconferencing room” via internet on the following days:

  • Class will meet for one hour in the “HPTI webconferencing room” via internet on Tuesdays, 10:00 am – TAIPEI Time (Thursday, 7:00pm Los Angeles) and Saturdays, 10:00 am – TAIPEI Time (Friday, 6:00am Los Angeles) each week.

COURSE CREDIT

There will be a quizzes, projects, and a comprehensive exam at the completion of the course and participants that complete the these with a passing grade will be awarded a certificate of competence in the area of study. This course counts toward Continuing Education Units for a number of hypnosis organizations, including the Society of Experiential Trance (see www.TranceSociety.org for more information).
