Now this is a fascinating development . . . marines are now learning mindful meditation techniques before deployment. The Mindfulness-based Mind Fitness Training (“M-Fit”), a fledgling military initiative that teaches service members the secular meditative practice of mindfulness in order to bolster their emotional health and improve their mental performance under the stress and strain of war.
Designed by former U.S. Army captain and current Georgetown University professor Elizabeth Stanley, M-Fit draws on a growing body of scientific research indicating that regular meditation alleviates depression, boosts memory and the immune system, shrinks the part of the brain that controls fear and grows the areas of the brain responsible for memory and emotional regulation.
The Washington Times has a fascinating feature on this valuable program here that is more than well worth the read.
When I first heard of the program, I thought “yes, that’s going to do them a lot of good” and it has. I also thought this is a natural evolution of the old New Earth Army programs which became coopted by the folks in psyops and interrogation and if those programs might represent the dark side of the evolution of those programs, the mindful meditation program would be on the light side.
