Rachel Zimmerman writes an absolutely wonderful piece on taking her daughter in for stitches and meeting an emergency room doctor who not only said things wouldn’t hurt, they don’t.
Actually, after leaving the hospital the little girl told her mother how happy she was she didn’t need to get stiches and shocked mother told her she had . . . and yet the girl was neither aware of the procedure nor in discomfort because her doctor knew how to talk to her and engage her imagination.
Some hypnotists specialize in pain relief and there are a number of techniques that work very well.
In the article, something you will notice is how the doctor not only engaged the little girl but he focused her attention on something else, a task she become very engaged in. Hypnotists would call focusing attention in order to bypass the critical factor of the conscious mind.
