I have recently been giving some thought to psychedelic experiences and have begun developing a trance process model that replicates the psychedelic experience via experiential hypnosis without the use of psychoactive substances (yep, been re-reading my Tim Leary – yep, I’ve mapped out his take on the psychedelic experience and the Book of the Dead as a trance process – and Robert Anton Wilson books with a whole bunch of Carl Jung). My goal here is not simply the loopy floaty high of the recreational psychedelic but the shamanic visionquest experience. This is not a particularly original idea (Masters and Houston did a great deal of work on this at their institute, albeit my goal is a single session process utilizing deep trance induction rather than a drawn out multi-session lengthy process as they approached it with such things as the Trance Induction Device (witch cradles) and the like).
In WORKING WITH DIFFICULT PSYCHEDELIC EXPERIENCES, Donna Dryer, M.D., of MAPS (Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies) presents a Practical Introduction to the Principles of Psychedelic Therapy. This 20-minute educational video teaches psychedelic drug users how to minimize psychological risks and explore the therapeutic applications of psychedelics. Narrated by Donna Dryer, M.D., the video demonstrates examples of when and how to help a friend, peer, or loved one make the most out of a difficult experience with psychedelics.
It elaborates on the four basic principles of psychedelic therapy:
1) Create a safe space
2) Sitting, not guiding
3) Talk through, don’t talk down
4) "Difficult" is not necessarily "bad."
Working with Difficult Psychedelic Experiences was originally produced for the curriculum of a church-based harm reduction drug education program for teenagers, but is intended as a tool for anyone who has ever used psychedelics, for anyone who might in the future, for anyone who knows someone who has ever used psychedelics, or for anyone who knows someone who might in the future. In other words, you! Working with Difficult Psychedelic Experiences is produced by Bricolage Media and MAPS, and directed and written by MAPS Director of Communications Jag Davies. It’s worth viewing, both from the perspectives of those who use psychedelic drugs and of those who wish to safely replicate the experience via trance.
