Ah, the mindwipe, that powerful technology from science fiction and fantasy that oh so just a little bit too many seek in real life.
As a hypnotist, I honestly can’t count the number of folks who have approached me asking if it would be possible for me to use hypnosis to wipe a memory from their own mind or – usually a bit more creepily – wipe a memory of something they have done from the mind of a friend or loved one (usually a wife or girlfriend). On my list of creepy requests, this comes in second only to the Wife Slut request in which someone asks me to covertly and without consent hypnotize their wives into becoming a complete and wanton slut . . . sometimes because they have cuckold fantasies (fantasies that would likely break up their marriage if they ever became reality) or because they wish to divorce their wives but don’t want to be the bad guy so they want a legitimate reason to do so, with humiliating their wives as a bonus (seriously, they think this would make them guiltless in the divorce . . . some folks just don’t think things through or have really simplistic situational ethics).
Now, I always send folks on their way if they make such requests. If a mindwipe request is from someone with an actual traumatic experience then I offer to help them via processes that will allow them to live their lives free of the negative emotional stress the event has created without artificially repressing actual memories (see previous writings here on this subject). Certainly, hypnosis is an excellent tool for such work.
Well . . . one reason hypnotists get odd requests of this sort if because of media portrayals and some folks confuse fantasy and science fiction with reality.
