Kaye Phillips performs Mermaid’s Lament

My daughter, Kaye Elizabeth Phillips, and two of her friends perform MERMAID’S LAMENT, Kaye’s original composition for flute, piano, and cello on 9 June 2011 at Tamkang Senior High School in Tamshui, Taiwan, where Kaye is a student in the music specialty program, majoring in Composition and Piano.

If you would like to watch the video in full resolution, check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TgGhFlJsbg. The video footage was shot during the performance by Lorraine Phillips and edited by moi.

While she has been writing original songs for a number of years, this is the first time Kaye has publically performed one of her own compositions for multiple instruments (yes, she wrote parts for each instrument). She started with the piano and then when it was time to expand for other instruments she added cello and oboe but eventually discarded the oboe added the flute to complete the trio. Kaye plays a number of instruments but has formally studied piano and cello. She plays drums for a rock band that she and a group of her friends formed. Seriously, the girl is versatile!

As her parents, Lorraine and I are super proud of her. See http://www.kayephillips.com for some of Kaye’s earlier work (you can also find other pieces on my youtube channel or blog). Kaye has her own personal youtube channel with some experimental and other musical work at http://www.youtube.com/user/wolfiebluewhite.

All the best and with much love to Kaye,
Brian
